Beginners Track: Web Development with Ruby on Rails with Chad Fowler
Excited about Ruby on Rails but you need to learn the basics first? Attend this 4 day university session with Chad Fowler and learn all the ins-and-outs to get the most out of the conference sessions!

This workshop assumes you have some prior experience with web development. You will also have played a little bit with RoR but now you need to get your hands dirty and get a solid grounding with the Ruby language and the Rails framework. We will launch directly into hands-on Rails development on day one. Through a series of hands-on exercises, each building on previous exercises, you will learn all major features of Rails 1.2. and, upon completion of the workshop, you will have developed your own Ajax-powered applications in Rails.

This hands-on, practical 4-day Ruby on Rails workshop has been developed by Chad Fowler, a software developer, author, and long-time leading contributor in the Ruby community. Chad is one of the developers and maintainers of RubyGems, the defacto standard packaging system for Ruby, a contributing author to Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmer's Guide and the author of the best-selling Rails Recipes.

  • Install and configure Ruby, RubyGems, and Rails
  • Explain the fundamentals of the Ruby language and of Rake
  • Use all tiers of the Rails implementation of the Model/View/Controller pattern
  • Use Rails database access features, including modeling of complex relationships
  • Send and receive mail from Rails applications
  • Develop REST-style web services with Rails
  • Create schema's with Active Record Migrations
  • Use Test Driven Development when buildiing your Rails applications
  • Implement Rails' Routing techology
  • Create dynamic Ajax applications using RJS
